* Make sure that your travel insurance includes cover while your bags are in the care of an airline (not all policies do). Your policy should have cover higher than the Montreal Convention limit (1,000 Special Drawing Rights per person).
* if you are travelling with someone else, consider packing some clothes in each bag / suitcase (in case one bag is delayed).* take medicines, valuables, passport, house keys, fragile items etc in you cabin luggage (and remove them if you are asked to check your cabin luggage into the hold because it is overweight)
* To prevent items being stolen, try to lock your bags (but if

* If you plan to carry a large item as baggage - check with the airline before you go to the airport. You may have to pay a special handling charge
